Frontier shoot to top of ball hockey league

Frontier have surged to the summit of the Bermuda Ball Hockey Association league following a six-match unbeaten run.

A 4-3 defeat at the hands of Hamilton Princess on the opening day of the league in October remains the only loss for Frontier, who have since been on the rampage with five wins in regulation time and one in a shootout.

With their biggest recent win a 9-1 demolition of CG Insurance, Frontier sit proudly atop the league with 17 points, four ahead of defending champions Appleby. CG, who were on top for the better part of last month are now in third with 12 points.

Frontier’s latest victory came with a 2-1 defeat of Positive Image Dental at Pembroke Community Club. Captain Pete Brodsky and Bill McClure were on target for the victors, with Positive Image Dental's goal coming from Tom Duggan.

McClure, one of the Frontier general managers, spoke of how being smart during the league’s player draft has helped achieve a great start to the season.

“We stumbled out of the gate with a loss in our first game, but haven’t looked back since,’’ McClure said.

“Bill Calko and I wanted to draft a team of hard workers who we could rely on to show up and have a good time.

“We ended up with a bunch of beauties and some good bounces that have propelled us to the top.

“We're lucky to have the league's leading scorer lighting the lamp regularly and a brick wall with the lowest GAA in the league holding it down in net.

“The season is off to a good start, but ultimately we’re thirsty for the cup. We’re out to score goals and chew bubblegum.

“Our last match against Positive Image Dental was a tough battle that went down to the wire and we were able to hold on to the lead.

“I shifted to defence in the third period. While we were applying pressure deep in their zone, I jumped in on a loose ball in the slot and hammered it low to the left side and it ended up going high to the right side bar down.

The highlight goal was a beautiful tip by Tom Duggan of Positive Image, with their goalie pulled in the third to make it a nail-biter.”

The league continues on Friday with the final matches before the Christmas break coming on Wednesday. The season then resumes on January 13.
