Wilkerson attends CFATF ministers’ council
Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, represented Bermuda at the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force’s Council of Ministers Meeting in the Cayman Islands.
Last week’s Council brought together ministers from CFATF member jurisdictions to address regional priorities in the fight against money laundering, terrorist financing, proliferation financing and other threats to the integrity of the financial system.
The meeting took place at an important stage for Bermuda, which is undergoing its own CFATF Fifth Round Mutual Evaluation. Officials are engaging with the CFATF mission team and assessors, ahead of the on-site visit scheduled for April 2027, a government spokeswoman said.
Mutual evaluations are peer reviews of how well a jurisdiction complies with FATF standards and how effective its systems are in practice. They are an important component of the international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework.
“Bermuda’s reputation depends in part on our ability to demonstrate that we take our international obligations seriously and that our systems continue to respond effectively to evolving financial crime risks,” said Ms Wilkerson.
She added that participation in the Council of Ministers on October 1 and 2 gave the island “a direct voice in the regional discussions and decisions that shape this work.”
She added: “For an international financial centre such as Bermuda, this ongoing work has practical consequences.
“We must be able to demonstrate that our legislative, regulatory and enforcement frameworks are effective and that Bermuda remains an active participant in regional and international efforts to combat financial crime.”
