Bermuda’s umbrella organisation for labour has announced its new slate of executive officers.

The Bermuda Trade Union Congress, which is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation, also marked May 1 as International Workers Day.

The Congress held its biennial congress on Monday, with Timothy Seon of the Prison Officers Association selected as president under article ten of the BTUC constitution.

Dean Smith, of the Fire Service Association, is first vice-president, Selena Fields, of the Bermuda Entertainment Union, is second vice-president and Audley Quallo, of the Bermuda Public Services Union, is general secretary.

Thelma Simmons, of the Bermuda Industrial Union, is assistant general secretary, while Renee Jones, of the BIU, and Shakia Smith, of the BPSU, are treasurer and assistant treasurer, respectively.

The BTUC said its first executive board meeting would be held in the coming weeks, with the congress looking forward to “continued dialogue, open communication and consultation that will encourage and promote effective labour and community relations”.

The BTUC added that it stood in solidarity with workers worldwide for International Workers Day.

The BTUC said it “remains steadfast in its mission to champion the rights and welfare of our members” under the island’s economic challenges.

“We recognise the importance of a robust economy that benefits all, and we will continue to engage with stakeholders to ensure that the voices of workers are heard and their needs addressed.

“Together, let us continue striving for fair wages, safe working conditions and social justice for all workers in Bermuda.”
