New air traffic controller celebrated
A Bermudian has completed “rigorous international and local training” on the way to becoming the island’s latest air traffic control specialist.
The Bermuda Airport Authority said Gordon Loader completed the training required for the safety-critical profession and has now assumed a full-time position in the air traffic control tower at LF Wade International Airport.
The BAA said Mr Loader is certified to work alongside experienced controllers to support the safe and efficient management of the island’s airspace.
It said his training, which was delivered in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation standards, included air traffic management, aviation law, navigation, meteorology, aircraft performance, human factors and advanced aerodrome control.
Following advanced aerodrome control instruction and intensive simulator-based practical training overseas, Mr Loader completed extensive on-the-job training focused on Bermuda’s airspace and procedures.
He successfully completed the required theoretical and practical examinations and was recommended for licensing by the BAA.
The aviation body said his qualification reflects a continued commitment to developing Bermudian talent and building a highly skilled local aviation workforce.
The BAA thanked its partners in the initiative — the internationally recognised Global ATS air traffic services training centre in Cheltenham, England and the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority — for their valuable support in Mr Loader’s training and development.
Mr Loader joins four Bermudians who were certified this year as air traffic control specialists.
Dejon Robinson, Hannah Fletcher, Nakiiah Robinson-Baker and X-onna Lowe-Stevens completed the aviation programme that included a stint overseas and transition training at the LF Wade International Airport air traffic control tower.
They were presented with their certificates during a brief ceremony outside the ATC tower in St David’s in January.
