Mourning Heritage Month

May 26, 2011I was not impressed with Heritage Month 2011. First of all I would like to know what's the definition of “Heritage in Bermuda”. The heritage committee for this month must have attended a month of funerals. I watch TV, listen to the radio, and read the newspapers daily and I saw very little of Bermuda's heritage promoted. I wonder who was this year's sponsors, it must have been the undertakers' association. I am not concerned with the Ministry in charge of the Heritage Month budget. I also wonder if the Salvation Army, Somerset Brigade, Bermuda Pipe and North Village bands were invited to participate, they have been missing for years. People like the live music and the marching bands in the parade. The committee needs to approach Shine Hayward to try and put together a brass marching band for next year. The horses have been a miss, but I know for safety reasons why they have been eliminated (just the same, they are a big miss).I am no longer an in-person spectator, CITV brought the event to me and I was bored after three hours of viewing. I would like to remind the future participants to get fit as they looked a bit weary. It was wonderful to see so many of our youth participating, they could use a bit more choreography. In my opinion the parade needs to go back to the Bernard Park. The artistic members of the community need to join the Heritage Board.I appreciated the acknowledgment of Ronnie Chameau. She is a regular caller on the Everest DeCosta show, sharing her history in culture of St David's. Michael Watson, I am a 100% supporter of your statement on Bermuda heritage, that all must remain Bermudian only. I suggest that every parish be encouraged to enter a float, government could help subside the cost of offering to pay 50 percent and the parish raise the balance of the funds needed. That would ensure there being at least nine floats every year. Now that the Heritage Month is over, would everyone please stand for a minute of silence for the death of 2011 Heritage Month.WILLARD FOXSmith's
