Football losing its way

October 17, 2011Dear Sir,I am writing you as a football fan of years past. I would like to say that the years I followed football were almost like following a religion. Today I don't care whether it's played or not, I have lost interest because of the violence, drugs and disrespect to the officials. I would like to see more discipline done by the Football Association and the individual clubs. No matter what the consequences are discipline has to be upheld and enforced to send a message to the players and the clubs. I would like to take this time to acknowledge some of the players that entertained me over the years.George Brangman — Somerset midfielder and defence.Granville Nusum — Warwick midfielder.Townsey Russell — PHC centre half.Derek Russell — PHC centre half. The late David Landy — Social Club fastest striker in the history of Bda.Bubba Daniels — Social Club centre half.Mr Bascome — Devonshire Cougars centre half.Mr Richardson — Boulevard centre halfDennis Wainwright — St George's Colts goalkeeper, also played many year with Social ClubThe best football team in Bermuda is the Red Devils now known as the Rams — a name I don't personally like, so whenever you address me I am known as Mr Red Devil or Mr North Village because that's the name of the team I follow.Sam Nusum — goalkeeperJoe Trott — centre halfWendell Baxter — sweeperCornell Castle — defence/mid fielder “my favourite player” and when he made the National Squad I shed a tear of joy because I was so happy.Randy Bean — most terrific attacker for midfielder. Melvin and Ralph Bean, Parks, Calvin and Sherwin Dill, Richard and Robert Calderon are all valuable players. The National Squad can never be complete unless one to five of the North Village players are a part of the team. If you don't believe me check the history. North Village players have always had the majority of its players picked for the squad and those players had many, many years of play. They made Bermuda proud because they took pride in the game. I would like to ask the Football Association, where are the teams they used to bring in to play during the Christmas and New Year holidays? In my opinion local football has lost its quality ever since the German coach who was hired by the BFA indicated that all coaches should be certified. We lost the majority of interested and dedicated coaches as a result. I would like to acknowledge the late Sylvan Musson, who was very successful for many years in the history of Bermuda coaching Social Club and he was not certified. PHC, North Village and Somerset had unqualified coaches yet they were successful also. I just want to say “Thank You” players for entertaining me over the years with exciting football games. On a closing note here is a question to Minister Blakeney, when is the national disaster going to become the national stadium?WILLARD FOXSmith's
