Rescued by heroes

November 8, 2011

Dear Sir,

As a crew member on the sailing vessel Elle, I read your coverage of our rescue by the M/V Oleander with great interest. While accurate, it did not tell the full story of the heroic and selfless actions of the captain and crew of the ship. Not only did they put themselves and their vessel at risk to save us, they displayed phenomenal seamanship to pull off the rescue successfully.

In heavy seas and high winds, the captain deftly manoeuvred his giant vessel to gently touch the side of our small, 46-foot wildly rocking sailboat. After I fell in the water (of no fault of theirs) they orchestrated a perfect game plan to fish me out.

Even after we got on board, the crew was focused on one thing, our continued comfort and safety. They offered us dry clothes to wear, food to eat and places to sleep. They did everything possible to ensure we were comfortable. Once they successfully docked the Oleander, Bermuda Container Lines sent a representative from their company, Blair (I'm sorry, I do not remember his last name) to help us with flights and get our lives together. They diverted a vessel at huge cost and risk to them and afterwards all Blair cared about was what more he could do to help us.

The captain and all the officers and crew of the M/V Oleander are true heroes. Without them I would not be alive today. I wish to express my gratitude to them and to Bermuda Harbour Radio for orchestrating the rescue.
