Time to be grateful

Minister’s comments disturbDecember 28, 2011Dear Sir,The very gentle rebuke by the Editor in the editorial of today’s date of Wayne Perinchief’s remarks ie “White men being killed as a result of gun violence would have brought an intervention by the UK government” and that “the international companies should do more to fund the fight against crime and violence” still leaves a disturbing question as to where Mr Perinchief’s mindset is.If one makes upsetting remarks and makes statements that get challenged and there is an apology (and I am not saying there is one) and possibly a retraction, one still wonders “was that what he really meant to say and believes”?The Editor once again came out with a very generous summation and said: “Mr Perinchief probably spoke out of frustration” as the crime problem is much more complex and difficult than most people would think.Nonetheless, there is still doubt and disappointment. The statements made by Mr Perinchief, the National Security Minister, were so slanted and incorrect. Did he not check or was he not aware that the international companies are most generous, and, I might add, put upon, but handle this situation with generosity and grace and have donated millions to address all the causes that trouble this lovely little island? So we should come in with a deep sense of gratitude and thanks that these companies are now, and have been, a solid core and anchor to our charitable well being in Bermuda.DIANA WILLIAMSPembroke
