Darrel’s Island idea for casino

Then and now: The then-Bermuda Airport at Darrell?s Island in the 1940s and today.

January 4, 2012Dear Sir,If gaming were to be allowed on cruise ships while in port in Bermuda, and also in our hotels on our islands, I would like to add my “three penny worth” to it, as I have some following suggestions. Darrell’s Island would be an ideal place to have a casino and entertainment facility for our tourists. It is Government owned, and should be easy to control for security as well. Instead of using regular ferryboats like we have now, I would suggest we use the hovercraft mode of transportation as Darrell’s Island has a slipway there and it could be used the same way as the past amphibious seaplanes used to do in the 1940s and early 1950s. Dockyard’s North Basin has that large slipway that the British Navy had for their seaplanes in the Second World War and this could be used by the hovercraft mode of transportation. After Morgan’s Point get their new hotel in place, they too could use the slipway that was built in the 1960s for the US Navy seaplanes to go in and out of the water of the Great Sound, again hovercraft mode of transportation could be used. I only suggested the hovercraft mode of transport as they are much faster than conventional ferries, and hovercraft can sit on top of the water regardless of weather conditions, using their cushion of air. Using the slipways that are already in place would make things easier for people to get on or off these hovercraft.Further to this suggestion I would like to add the following, Darrell’s Island has an electricity supply in place there, a large water tank would have to be built using an osmosis plant to convert seawater into freshwater to add assistance to the electric supply that is already there now, wind turbines, and solar power energy could be installed on this island. If docks were built on both sides of Darrell’s Island, tour boat excursions could use this spot for their recreations. Also, the Hamilton/Paget, Hinson Island, Warwick Ferry could be incorporated into Darrells’s Island as well. Darrell’s Island could be used the same way that Hawkins Island entertainment had been used in the past. A trash pick up system would have to be implemented with a local contractor, and also a delivery service as well.PETER BROMBYPaget
