Turning around tourism in ten steps

Bermuda needs a tourism authority to lead the rejuvenation of the industry

January 7, 2012Dear Sir,The Ten Point Tourism Plan follows that will negate the need of spending thousands of our tax dollars on foreign experts’ reports again.1. Dissolve Tourism as a Government Ministry.2. Create a Tourism Authority with full-time salaried tourism professionals and individual volunteer representatives from all Bermuda tourism-related industries.3. Invite all major local hotels with international gaming experience to create small in-hotel casinos and entertainment showrooms.4. Pass a law that allows only registered hotel guests to gamble.5. Eliminate the automatic gratuity system in all hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and bars.6. Allow each hotel and guest house to have a free beach shuttle for all of their registered guests.7. Give every visitor a coupon book that allows them to purchase locally made products at deeply discounted prices.8. Upgrade the training of all hotel employees in the special nuances of serving high-end visitors and meeting their expectations.9. Appoint a local advertising company and handle all of the Island’s marketing and promotional needs.10. Then make every salaried individual in the industry responsible for improving visitor numbers and rewarded when they do.This plan could have been implemented 15 years ago. Bermudians know what needs to be done. We just need a leader with the vision and determination to see it through.JOHN H WHITEPort St Lucie, Florida
