Take some responsibility

July 1, 2013Dear Sir,I wish to express my opinion the article written by Owain Johnston-Barnes dated Friday June 28, 2013, that of “Grand Atlantic is Bermudian disaster on a multitude of levels”. I ask the 45 letter writing objectors of the development; are they aware of the 45-60 job site employees that have lost their jobs due to their disapproval? Namely masons, labours, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, dry wallers, tillers, counter top installers, painters, air conditioning installers, etc.Your objections have further had repercussions on other Bermudian business. Maxcem Bda Ltd, cement importers, the two block processing plants, Biermans and SAL, Bermuda Concrete Ornamental Products, C E Concrete Products, makers of eve slate, gutter stones and stepping stones. Hardware stores that provide roof lumber, nails, screws, “hurricane clips”, etc. Appliance stores that provide, stoves, refrigerators, washer, dryers, BBQs. Plumbing supplies and electrically supply companies where we get the tubs, sinks, toilets, wiring, light switches, plugs and the like. Paint companies, repaint, brushes etc. But before we can do these things we need an architect to draw plans that must be submitted with a cheque to the Government Planning Department for their approval. Government then employs knowledgeable people to inspect workmanship and to ensure all correct building codes are met. These are inspectors for the building structure itself, electrical, plumbing and health. Once all inspections are done and the building is passed, an ARV is achieved!“Bingo” Land Tax is due ... Yeah, money for our Government. So how many people are employed or unemployed above? I ask the “BEST” group, Joan Cabral, Steve Thompson, Karen Lomas, the 45 letter writing objectors and the other 120 signatories on the partition (some probably repeat letter objectors) if they have a “plan” to keep these people employed and the business afloat? I believe further that if it were not for the scare mongering by some of the above and others not mentioned, these homes would have sold! It is unfortunate that the Government at the time, the Progressive Labour Party is blamed for this project being a disaster, when in fact BEST, the petitioners, letter writers and others need to take some responsibility. Whilst further, the developer has been taken to the slaughter for doing his job.DSL REGOSmith's parish
