Why are our leaders forgetting or ignoring their foundation?

1 March 2014

Dear Sir,

It is time to face the truth about Bermuda — this Island’s economic road is not supposed to ensure full economic growth for most of its people. In this we will always be forced to be obliged to invite new masters from other lands to run this plantation.

Those who fill the seats of power and decision proclaim that we know them, that we understand their foundation upbringing. Perhaps that is true, but the question we are forced to ask — Why have you forgotten or ignored that foundation? It is not for us to judge you, but for you to analyse your footsteps as we the people strive to do.

In the sixties and seventies most of you that sit in position on “the hill of decision” on Parliament Street were alive — black, white or other. In light of this you are conscious of the difficulties between the leadership of Bermuda and the people during those periods. Yet you somehow have concluded that we should revisit those negative patterns as our way of life today in Bermuda. So I, as a citizen of Bermuda, must ask you why are you prepared to install a “ritual of deception” against those that were born in this wonderful Island?

The desire to vehemently ensure economic prosperity for everyone but Bermudians is plain to see. The only support you are enjoying are from those who come from other lands and the minority of Bermudians who now rank themselves among the wealthy or wannabes.

Instead of putting in measures that will ensure we the people can evolve out of servitude or slavery in a large way, you have the gall to attempt to convince us that importation of as many destructive devices as possible will direct us to some form of promise land.

The Migration Institute, the company you invested in to convince us that commercial passports was worthy of consideration as a part of our regrowth, have been warning consistently on their webpage that overindulgence of foreign workers and neglecting the opportunities and needs of local inhabitants is not only suicide for that community, but breeds negative emotions towards those foreign workers from the local inhabitants. The Institute also warns that this undermines any hopes of economic stimulus for that community, because of the large volume of cash that is removed from that community in rapid consistency. This has been increasingly a part of what you, the Government, have been doing since you have been in position, increasing the guarantee of work for foreign workers in Bermuda and at the same time denying real opportunity for your own people — born Bermudians.

In terms of land mass we do not have a lot of it, but again you sell it off in buckets to foreign wealth, ignoring the notion that you are also responsible to keep as much as possible for future generations. Your adherence to destroying any hope or ambitions for your own people is trying to say the least, you the sitting Government, the OBA is treading down a parallel path similar to those in communities around the world that have experienced an uprising of local inhabitants because of these sort of choices. This is not a position of one who is bias, but it can clearly be seen that you, the One Bermuda Alliance, are returning Bermuda back to the days of 40 or 50 years ago. It will not be tolerated.
