Please, stop with the victimisation fixation

13 July, 2014

Dear Sir,

In answer to PLP Party Leader Marc Bean.

In answer to your call for all Bermudians to unite to have the Governor removed from office — I respectively decline.

Your vitriolic rhetoric is getting very tiresome. You seem to be an agitator with the goal of spreading the old traditional folk song that frames Bermudians as victims, rather than a thriving community with enormous potential. Please stop perpetuating the message of victimisation among your constituents.

This message is archaic, dated and downright wrong.

We do not need the government or the governor to help anyone achieve equality or right any perceived wrongs.

Before blaming society or looking to government to be responsible for anyone or their family: look in the mirror.

What choices did one make? Drop out of school? Hang out with the wrong crowd? Get involved in drugs or gangs? Teen pregnancy? Is any of this the governments fault?

All the governor has said is that there will not be a commission of inquiry.

This does not, in any way, disrespect Bermudians or make a mockery of Parliament.

If any person feels they were not treated fairly for past deeds they have every right to go forward with their claims through the regular traditional legal system.

To ask for a blanket examination of every transaction of land transfer from more than 60 years ago is a total waste of time and money.

I am in no way saying that every land transfer was perfectly orchestrated, however this should be examined case by case for anyone with valid justifications based on fact not speculation.

Your self-serving agenda for power and control has been obtained by playing the victim card. It’s time to drop the old rhetoric and update your cause.

If we want to move forward the old rhetoric needs to be broken down and recast. This fixation on victimisation needs to go. There is a cost to all of this. You’re not fighting for your constituents you’re just causing them problems.

We are in a crisis in Bermuda but it is an ECONOMIC ONE. How about using your political power to enlighten your constituents about the benefits of liberty and encourage them to pursue their dreams by hard work and determination.

Remind people that they themselves control their own destiny rather than playing the blame game to justify personal failures.

Bermudians are a great people with great potential.

Please fight to fix the economic crisis and provide real solutions rather than fighting for your own personal and professional agenda.

Sincerely

Melinda Mayne
