Memo to Furbert: you should spend ‛our’ money in Bermuda

Dear Sir,

I find it incredible that a government minister is quoted as saying “every Bermudian is doing it” while referring to shopping online. He decries the lack of choice and goes on to say stores should provide a wider choice.

Should “every” Bermudian shop overseas, I am afraid the number of stores will be even fewer.

May I say to him: “You have made your money in Bermuda, you are being paid by the Bermudian taxpayer and you should spend ‛our’ money in Bermuda.”

The big stores overseas have large bulk-buying power, getting their prices lower. When one is buying a small number of items, a higher price is paid.

What we need is more people in Bermuda. The economy took a downturn when some 5,000 or more people left the island.

The Government should be promoting Buy Bermuda, not draining our money to other countries. We do not produce anything of substance. The biggest drain on the country is the Civil Service, the largest employer in Bermuda.
