Cancel the vehicle licences of traffic offenders

Crash site: the only way to stop collisions is to penalise bad drivers. (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Accidents on our roads are caused by bad driving, whether it’s bikes, cars, taxis or buses, and it is caused by the people operating these vehicles — sober or not. This is not a news bulletin by any means.

Yes, you have to stop at stop signs; no, you cannot go through red lights; and no, the speed limit is not 60mph or higher! I know I’m wasting my time and that of The Royal Gazette but when will the penny drop?

If you’re late, leave home earlier. Impounding vehicles of those people taken off the road is not feasible. There’s not enough space. But the vehicle licence could be cancelled and only renewed when the person’s suspension time is over and they have paid the appropriate licence fee to renew it.

Further, as has been suggested, the offenders should have to take a driver’s test before they regain their licence. Slow down. Save your loved ones — and the families of those you injure … or kill — some grief. Please!
