Next ombudsman not a Black or White issue

Dear Sir,

Derrick Burgess, the Deputy Speaker of the House

I read the front-page article with comments attributed to Derrick Burgess on the matter of the appointment of a new ombudsman. Surely, it is time to move beyond racial complexion, White or Black, being some form of qualification.

What is wrong with the job being awarded on merit to the best person. After all, it pays very well, and as a taxpayer I like to know I’m getting value for money.

I feel sure that if Mr Burgess had need of serious surgery, he would go for the best doctor/surgeon around. I would.

Complexion would not be a factor in his choice, nor mine.

JEFF PAYNE
