Yet another plea to turn down the volume

West End Sailboat Club

Dear Sir,

The following is a letter written to Norbert Simmons, the assistant secretary of West End Sailboat Club, and copied to the Bermuda Police Service and the Liquor Licence Authority’s government liaison.

As you are well aware, since April 2022 loud music being played outdoors at West End Sailboat Club has repeatedly disturbed residents as close as Sea Wall Drive (Ireland Island) and as far away as Cavello Bay.

It goes without saying that hosting outdoor reggae sessions within a residential neighbourhood until 3am is utterly reprehensible/disrespectful conduct. It also goes without saying that holding loud, outdoor music events in a residential neighbourhood for four nights in a row is utterly reprehensible/disrespectful conduct.

The obvious nature of these acts has not changed WESC conduct, but I mention the obvious to cast light on the not so obvious. That is, there are nights where the club plays the music lower than normal — such is the case on Sunday nights.

If there is any ambiguity about how loud it is still being played, please be advised that the bass from the music last night (October 8, 2023) could be heard and felt both outside and inside of my home for several hours — from about 7.30pm. I tried to go to bed at 10pm, but I was prevented from falling asleep until after 11.30pm owing to the bass vibrating my bedroom.

Again, this has a major impact on residents and students who have to go to work/school the next day. I’m also sure that it is a major problem for others who simply want some peace and quiet. I therefore request yet again that West End Sailboat Club reduce the volume to a level that the members of the executive would find acceptable in their own neighbourhoods.
