The never-answered questions of accountability

Walter Roban, the Minister of Home Affairs (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

In today’s paper (October 10, 2023), Walter Roban is adamant that the Regulatory Authority will be “held accountable” if anyone there has made a mistake in its approval of the rate hike for the fuel adjustment charge. I was wondering why the RA should be held accountable when it appears that no one in government ever is.

On whose watch did the computer systems hacker get in and cause the national security issue with the cyberattack? Are they going to be held accountable? Is the department who was supposed to implement a new cybersecurity policy back in 2017 going to be “held accountable”?

Is the individual who approved the release of $800,000 of our money for the supposed recording studio in Dockyard going to be “held accountable”?

Was the department that built the wall on someone else’s property on Harbour Road, causing untold misery for commuters for months longer than necessary “held accountable”?

Are the folks who are allowing every government-owned building to fall into disrepair and decay — has anyone looked at the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse recently? A disgrace! — being “held accountable”?

Was anyone “held accountable” for primary schools not being ready to open at the beginning of term?

Is anyone going to be “held accountable” for the failure to establish a casino gaming industry? Or for any of the other promises that have never materialised?

Isn’t that the biggest problem with our government? No one is ever held accountable for either what they do badly or what they don’t do.
