‘Take time to listen to us’

Potholes around the island (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

The Little River Band sang “ … time for a cool change”. I feel a change coming — do you? We have to admit that all is not well on our beautiful, precious island.

The example that first comes to mind is the condition of our roads and the infrastructure in general. Have you ever seen Bermuda in the state it is now? How did we get to this point? It is heartbreaking to drive by the Deputy Governor's house and see plywood in the windows and a general lack of upkeep so evident. Where else in the world does a governor have to move out of their residence owing to lack of upkeep.

Think about the person for whom you voted in the last election. Has he or she visited you since the election? If you see them in town or at the grocery store, do they stop and engage in friendly conversation or ask you about your family, job or if there’s something you’d like to discuss?

Do you believe they are in office to serve the constituents who put them there? Do they even care what you think about anything? If you answer negative, then don't you agree it’s time for a change? But let’s not think in terms of parties; let’s think in terms of people. Forget about party affiliation and that you should always “X” the same box your parents and grandparents did.

We need people in government who care about you, who are there to listen to you and your concerns, people who will actually do what they say they will do. The island needs to be run like a business. Savvy politicians are not needed; we need people who will start working on our problems and consult with those who elected them to do so.

We now have people stepping up in various districts who say they are interested in helping to put things right. Some we’ve never heard of or met and don't know anything about them. People with new and fresh ideas are needed now. Give them a chance. Those currently in office who are doing their best — for us: keep on doing it. But take time to listen to us.

I often think we should have taken the direction of pathways to status. Yes, we need the outside influence and talent — we cannot do it all on our own. Welcome those who want to be here and help us to be successful in rescuing our wonderful Bermuda.

Time for a change? You bet your boots it is!
