Dear Sir,

I was sad to see that Gilbert Institute has been listed for the chopping block. I attended Gilbert from 1961 until 1964, the most enjoyable time of my childhood. I remember many enjoyable days sitting in class and listening to the teachers. I remember a few names from those days, one of the teachers Mrs Bacon and several students.

Many of the students made lasting impressions. Gary Guerra or Guerro, I believe was his name, was extremely fast in track events. Louis, Beverly and Eddie Everly, Gail with her blonde hair. I had a big crush on her.

I learnt to play marbles, cricket and soccer. The fun we had running track, doing the high jump and also the hop, skip and jump. Looking for lizard eggs in the leaves.

Riding in the float we built, The Old Lady and the Shoe. Getting in trouble and having to see the Headmaster for chasing the girls so I could give them a kiss.

I learnt so much about maths, how to write properly. The school I am sure will be missed. The teachers were wonderful and gave us so much attention.

I visited Bermuda a few years ago and went to see our old school. I had such a marvellous time, memories were flooding back to me. The cove I used to swim in with the cave just outside the opening. China berry trees. The rubber tree that seemed so huge at the time up Tamarind Vale where we used to live, all the beautiful flowers.

Sadly we moved back to America in 1966. I have always missed those days and the island life, the friendliness of everyone, the candy for a couple of farthings, kite day and so much more. Thank you to everyone for making those days so happy, you are all missed. God save the King!
