Time to put Bermuda first
Dear Sir,
Bermuda has paid millions for a new asphalt plant. Our roads remain disgraceful. Yet shipment of the plant was delayed while the Government considered relocating quarry operations, after the owners of the adjoining Rosewood property asked for one more chance to make their case for the quarry site.
That should offend every Bermudian.
Gencom has been involved with Rosewood Tucker’s Point for years. If the quarry was so important to its plans, why is this being entertained now, after repeated delays, after public money has already been spent and after residents have waited far too long for basic road infrastructure?
This is public land, public infrastructure, public money and public inconvenience. Every pothole, damaged vehicle and dangerously delayed road repair is being absorbed by people who live and work here, while the Government appears to have us bent over a barrel for a powerful private developer.
If the Government believes the quarry should be moved, say so. If Gencom has been given any assurance, option, preferred position or understanding, say so. If the asphalt plant is delayed because Rosewood wants another bite at the quarry, say so.
But do not treat Bermudians like we are too naive to see what is happening.
The roads belong to Bermuda. The quarry belongs to Bermuda. The asphalt plant was bought with Bermuda’s money.
Government’s first duty is to serve Bermuda, not Gencom.
