Office products and services company AF Smith Trading has cut six jobs citing the “depressed” Bermuda economy.Confirming the layoffs, AF Smith CEO Tim Smith said yesterday that five of the six staff let go were Bermudian.AF Smith is a leading provider of office products and services, now employing 58 people at its offices, store and distribution Centre on Tumkins Lane, Hamilton.“Over the past year we have worked very hard to avoid redundancies but the continued depressed state of Bermuda’s economy forced us to reach this unavoidable decision,” Mr Smith said.“Basically, overall revenue is down to levels we have not seen for several years and as our customers make adjustments to lower their costs, we have had to respond accordingly.“We are saddened to lose talented employees, some of whom have worked with us for more than 15 years.”He said that all posts affected by the redundancies were in support roles where their workloads were impacted by lower revenue on certain product lines.“The company sees growth opportunities on which it intends to capitalise but overall has had to reduce its staff count against a very challenging macroeconomic backdrop,” Mr Smith said.He said the number of posts affected represented ten percent of the company’s work force and came into effect at the end of March.
