Crisson’s jewellery store in St. George’s closed its doors yesterday citing lack of business in the Old Town. One full-time employee lost their job.Crisson’s general manager Susan Millar said it was “a very difficult decision”, however “sales were not sustainable to having the store open any longer”.She said the continued lack of cruise ships calling in St George’s had hurt sales the most.“It’s the same old cry a lot of retailers have been having down here in St. George’s,” Ms Millar said, adding the company had thought long and hard about the decision to close. The inventory at the Water Street store will be moved to the Hamilton Crisson’s stores.Crisson’s had leased its premises on Water Street for many years. The jeweller at one time had two stores in St George’s, but its York Street corner location was closed a few years ago.Crisson’s is the latest major retailer to pull out of the Old Town in the economic downturn. In March, after decades in St George’s, AS Cooper’s closed down and the Cracker Box souvenir store shut its doors. Both companies blamed the tough economy — and lack of a cruise ship.St George’s this year saw its third season without a regular cruise ship and no ground-breaking on a proposed Park Hyatt resort.
