Ten Bermudians lose their jobs

Two companies, XL and Island Glass, are each laying of five staff.

Ten Bermudians have lost their jobs as one business restructures a department and another suffers from the economic downturn.Five staff are to lose their jobs as XL Insurance Bermuda reorganises its claims department and Island Glass has laid off five Bermudians after suffering a dramatic decrease in sales.According to XL the reorganisation was due to a new system implementation and a decline in business claims.“It is standard for global organisations like XL, which are focused on operating efficiently and effectively, to continually manage and review the performance of all functions and processes across the globe to ensure that we are operating at the highest levels in the marketplace,” said an XL spokesperson. “This involves changes to resources where appropriate.”The company said that due to the implementation of XL’s global insurance claims system, XL GlobalClaim, and a decline in business claims, a decision was made to restructure XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd’s claims department. The restructuring resulted in the elimination of five analyst positions, all of which were Bermudian. As part of the restructuring, XL will also recruit for two claims counsels and a claims administrator.“As is XL’s custom, those impacted will receive severance packages beyond legal requirements as well as outplacement counselling throughout the process,” said the company. “XL remains committed to its Bermuda underwriting platform which is valuable to its global operations and inextricably linked to its success.”Island Glass Vice president and general manager Paul Martin said the window company had seen “dramatic decreases in sales with the decline in the construction industry”.Four of the employees let go worked in administration and support.Prior to the job cuts Island Glass employed 35 people of which 89 percent were Bermudians or spouses of Bermudians.“Needless to say this is a sad day for all of us at Island Glass as these employees were part of our team and worked well within the team,” Mr Martin said today in a news release.“Financial constraints have forced to us to make this painful decision during these tough economic times.”
