This will be the last season The Card Cove will be selling Christmas cards as the decades old store is closing its doors for good at the end of the year. The Queen Street store just celebrated its 40th anniversary in October and sells small gift items and wrapping paper as well as a selection of greeting cards.“It’s the economy — lack of business, lack of traffic,” said owner and store manager Christine Riihilouma. “We noticed we didn’t have the traffic we used to, many of the people who used to send cards overseas are no longer here. Plus, every store is selling cards these days.”The advent and popularity of the electronic card also aided in the shop’s demise.“Young people aren’t buying cards these days like the older generation did, they use e-cards,” she said. “Cards have hit their expiration date.”The Riihilouma family has held the lease on the shop since the 1930s and that is where the family’s original store, The Little French Shop, once stood. The Little French Shop sold Bermudian souvenirs, gift items and perfumes. The store, now called Flying Colours, is currently located down the block. One employee will lose their job due to the closing of The Card Cove.Estelle Dixon, who is in her mid 80s, has been a loyal long-time employee since The Card Cove opened.“She’s never had a day off sick from work in her life,” said Ms Riihilouma. “She is truly an amazing woman.”Ms Dixon was even held up a knifepoint a year ago and came back to work the next day.Another employee, Becky Howes, had also been with the shop for many years but left in May for health reasons. The Card Cove not only had loyal employees but also customers, said Ms Riihilouma.“We value and appreciate our customers who have stood by us,” she said. “We’ve had very loyal customers for a long time and appreciate their business over the years.”The shop is currently holding a 50 percent off sale on all ‘everyday’ cards.
