Appleby awards scholarships, bursaries to law students

Appleby have announced six 2013 scholarship and bursary recipients.They have awarded the firm’s Legal Education Scholarship, valued at $30,000, to Catherine Campbell, a recent graduate with first class honours from University of Leicester, who begins her studies this month at University College London to pursue an LLB.Appleby bursaries have been awarded to five students this year: Andrew Burnett-Herkes, currently enrolled at University of Portsmouth where he is pursuing an LLB; Shannon Cann, a recent graduate of University of the West of England, who begins her studies this month at The University of Law to pursue an LLM; Katherine Davidge, currently studying at University of Kent where she is pursuing an LLB; Cathryn Minors, a recent graduate of University of the West of England, who is attending The University of Law this month to pursue an LLM LPC; and Melissa Spurling, currently enrolled at University of Kent where she is pursuing an LLB.Appleby explained that the Appleby Legal Education Scholarship and bursaries are awarded each year to Bermudian students who are pursuing legal studies and intending to return to Bermuda to practice law.For more than 35 years, the Partners of Appleby have awarded scholarships and bursaries to qualified Bermudian applicants.In addition, the firm also award a Berkeley Institute Scholarship and Allanna Bean is the recipient this year. She is attending Johnson & Wales University this month to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology. And the Berkeley Institute Bursary has been awarded to China Richardson, who is attending Bermuda College to pursue studies in risk management and insurance.Appleby explained that their partnership with The Berkeley Institute began in 1995 to honour their common goal of excellence at school and at work. Berkeley graduating students seeking to continue their education in Bermuda or abroad, at either the grade 12 or 13 or associates degree level, are eligible to apply for The Berkeley Institute Scholarship and Bursary each year.Bermuda managing partner Kiernan Bell said: “Each year we review applications from highly academic and well-rounded Bermudians and this year’s recipients are a testament to the level of talented young people we continue to see in our community. The future of the legal profession looks very bright.
