North East Hamilton meeting oversubscribed

The redevelopment of an underdeveloped portion of the City of Hamilton, could mean a significant transformation for the area over time.

But it will come only as property and commercial owners join with developers, small businesses and labour to imagine a new future for the North East of Hamilton.

A free public meeting tonight is the next step and so many people signed up to attend that it has been oversubscribed.

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation has had to increase projected attendance for the meeting, in which people can learn how they can participate in the framework for the long sought after redevelopment.

The seminar for what could be one of the island’s largest urban renewal projects, originally had registration capacity set at 50, but now has finally been cut at 60.

This was subject to space restrictions at the North East Hamilton Incubator Hub, the Donald French Building, on Elliott Street in Hamilton.

Donte Hunt, micro, small and medium enterprise officer noted: “We will proceed with this one first. But if there are more people interested, we are open to considering a follow-up meeting.”

The audience will hear more about the North East Hamilton Plan 2022 and the Approved Residential Scheme from Shawn Brown and Meka Stede, of the BEDC’s Uptown Development Authority.

Mr Hunt said: “We want people to have a better understanding of both plans. And then they will have a better understanding of how they can potentially get involved, and what opportunities are open to them.

“If we can get to exploring one major project, there are new policy guidelines that may be able to help a developer make it start to happen.”

Speakers will explore the intricacies of the new Economic Empowerment Zone guidelines for residential development in the area, highlighting key considerations, opportunities, and potential challenges for investors, developers, and other stakeholders.

Mr Hunt said those signed up for the meeting include developers, together with area residents, both commercial and residential.
