Future of Sandys shop a mystery

Best kept secret: the building housing De Island Shack in Sandys is being sold

Although it had rave reviews on websites such as TripAdvisor, De Island Shack in Sandys has shut its doors.

JBM Realty and Associates agent Heather Telford said: “The building has been sold.”

The shop was popular for its coffee, doughnuts, strawberry lamingtons and Danishes.

The listing for the bright yellow cottage at 56 Somerset Road, on the real estate website Property Skipper, this week said the building was “under contract”.

The telephone number on the business’ Instagram is no longer in service, and the page has not been updated since January 8.

There is no message of closure or relocation on the business’ social media accounts.

Previous owner Carmen Tucker, who sold the business in 2021, said the building had been up for sale since last year.

Seeing the sign and furniture disappear, seemingly overnight, some area residents and De Island Shack fans reacted with sadness and dismay.

A Facebook post from Heidi Cowen, who runs the Dockyard Arts Centre, and Bermuda Byways Tours, stated on her business Facebook page: “Hard working and dedication … We’re going to miss these guys with their awesome coffee and their home made goodies! Hoping they find a new location in the west end to move to.”

On the same post, artist Jonah Jones who runs a nearby guesthouse, called the closure “most unfortunate”. He said the place had been popular with his guests.

Artist Sundee Faulkner hoped De Island Shack would move further west to her neighbourhood in Dockyard, especially with The Pastry Shop having recently moved to Hamilton.

Another commenter said: “I always loved that burst of colour as I rounded the bend”.

De Island Shack received 31 excellent reviews on Trip Advisor over the years, with one review posted in July 2023 stating: “We had a great sandwich and dessert from this place.

“The sandwich was tasty, but the apple crumb cheesecake dessert was amazing! Definitely get it if you stop by! I told my local friend about this place and she didn’t know about it, but now she will come by!”

Another review on Tripadvisor in 2022 called De Island Shack “Bermuda’s best kept secret”.
