Custom Mechanics revs up for growth
When Kenny DeSilva moved his motorcycle shop to Jackson’s Way in Hamilton the space was five times bigger than his old location.
A year later, he has run out of space in the old carwash next to the Bull’s Head Car Park, and is renting warehouse space elsewhere to store merchandise, and needs still more.
“Since we have been in this building, things have blown up for us,” he said. “We are doing well with repairs. New bike sales are taking off. The location has been a blessing.”
He has added several new models to his cycle line-up, but bestsellers continue to be the Yamaha Aerox and the Yamaha NMax.
“With Yamaha, so you can’t go wrong with the quality,” Mr DeSilva said.
They have hired another staff member to work in the garage and have another on the way.
“We have the same great service as we did at the old location on St John’s Road,” he said.
Since the business’s launch in town, it has imported seven containers with around 28 cycles in each.
“We have imported close to 200 cycles,” Mr DeSilva said.
Shipping has been one of Mr DeSilva’s headaches in the last year. Global disruptions have frequently changed estimated delivery times, meaning that shipments either come in late, or several shipments come in all at once.
Having a lot of stock at once has had its bright side.
“If sales are good, then we are doing all right with the extra merchandise,” he said.
He said global conflict has pushed shipping prices up.
“We are trying to keep our prices level, but in some cases it is hard,” he said. “Container fees have gone up $2,000 to $3,000 more than usual.”
To celebrate its first birthday, Custom Mechanics is holding a quick blowout sale this month. The promotion includes discounts on every bike in the shop, with some models up to $1,000 off.
Mr DeSilva said when he first moved, he expected to do better in the new space, but never anticipated just how well the business has done.
“It is mind blowing,” he said. “It has been a blessing.”
Ironically, Mr DeSilva said many people still do not know Custom Mechanics has moved.
“Imagine how well we do when they find out,” he laughed.
