Demeka “Tiny T” Tacklyn has launched a third retail outlet with a focus on helping customers show their Cup Match colours.

Ms Tacklyn sells children’s toys such as a real cooking kitchen play set, baby strollers, natural products, essential oils, sheets and dresses, among other things. Many of her products feature locally themed designs unique to her stores.

The spacious showroom at 27 Queen Street, Hamilton, which previously housed a pet store, seems a far cry from her first location 20 years ago on Court Street.

“Back then, I took the smallest space available,” she said. “It was actually a closet. It was really about 5ft by 12ft.”

She still has Street Vybez on Court Street, but did not want to be tied to one corner of Bermuda.

“I’m getting more and more ideas,” she said. “I do not want to limit myself.”

The retailer initially felt a little intimidated moving into the downtown Hamilton market, but it has worked out well for her.

“I see a lot of tourists and meet a lot of different people,” she said. “I’m very happy about that.”

Ms Tacklyn feels Court Street needs to promote its retailers more.

Her latest store is pulling in a lot of shoppers, even though it has only been open a short time. “People have been intrigued,” she said.

Right now, her Cup Match collection dominates the Queen Street store, with towels, dresses and T-shirts in Cup Match colours. She is most excited about her latest Cup Match-themed product: sneakers in blue and blue, or red and blue.

“They are just for fun,” she said. “They are really lightweight.”

Ms Tacklyn said retail is not just about making money.

“I also do it for fun and creativity and for the vibes,” she said, adding that retail and self-employment is about doing the best you can.

“As you grow, you might find different challenges,” she said. “It is important to get enough rest. I just want to encourage people to never give up, follow your passion and keep moving.”

The Queen Street store, which is still unnamed, follows a second location opened at 57 Front Street last November.

However, the latest space is temporary, since the building is up for sale for $2.7 million.

“Nothing is promised to you,” Ms Tacklyn said, philosophically. “I will be here until at least Christmas.”
