The BAS Group of Companies is expanding its student training programme across its subsidiaries, with plans to offer more young Bermudians hands-on experience in skilled trades.

The move follows the completion of Otis Elevator Co (Bermuda)’s summer student programme by Citayo Outerbridge, who received practical training in the elevator and electrical fields.

BAS said it now plans to extend its apprenticeship and learning opportunities across BAS Facilities Management, Weir Enterprises and Cedar Isle Cleaning.

Weir Enterprises will be the next company to expand the initiative, welcoming several students for hands-on placements alongside its auto technicians.

Navi Dhesi, chief executive of the BAS Group of Companies, said the programme was designed to bridge the gap between technical education and experience in the workplace.

He said: “Our summer student programme provides students with an opportunity to take the technical knowledge they have gained through their education and apply it in a real-world work environment.

“It is important for young people to gain practical experience, develop their confidence, and understand the opportunities available within the skilled trades.”

Mr Dhesi said the group was pleased to have supported Mr Outerbridge while he gained experience in the elevator and electrical fields.

“We believe in educating the next generation, and programmes like this are how we invest in Bermuda’s future workforce,” he added.

Mr Outerbridge said the programme had given him a clearer idea of what a career in the industry could involve.

He said: “Working alongside the Otis team and learning about the elevator and electrical trades hands-on gave me a real sense of what a career in this industry could look like.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity and proud to have finished the programme, and I’m excited to see where it can take me.”
