Bermuda Power Boat Association (BPBA) will stage a Circumnavigation Race tomorrow to begin at 1pm at Ferry Reach.Race organisers anticipate that as many as 20 boats in nine classes will show up for the event.The race is designed to help new BPBA members acclimatise to the challenging conditions on South Shore ahead of the Around the Island Race.“It’s a shakedown for Around the Island Race,” said BPBA vice-commodore Ernie Mello. “The circumnavigation race will give them their first run down the South Shore.”Due to an act of parliament, BPBA members will not be allowed to use the traditional Around the Island Race course during tomorrow’s race, which was first held in 2004.“It’s not the Around the Island Race course at all . . . it’s just a circumnavigation of Bermuda,” Mello said. “We are not allowed to go inside Hamilton and must stay 100 yards off the reef line.”Tomorrow’s forecast calls for blustery conditions which could force postponement of the race.“The winds are forecast to be between 18-25 knots which is a bit too high for racing,” said BPBA commodore Paul Wellman. “But we are still going to show up to race because anything is possible and hopefully the race will go ahead as planned.“However, if the race is postponed we will have it the following week.”
