Lady Bluebirds claim tourney title

Triumphant Lady Bluebirds players strike a pose after successfully defending their Slyvia Eastley Tournament title earlier this week

Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds successfully defended their Sylvia Eastley Tournament title at Bernard Park earlier this week. And they did so the hard way, coming from behind to edge Data Tech Netts 17-15 in a thrilling final that went right down to the wire.Ebonie Burgess (9pts) and Danielle Raynor (8pts) led the Lady Bluebirds’ scorers in the low-scoring match that could’ve gone either way.Lady Bluebirds appeared to be losing their grip on their title after trailing Netts 7-8 at the half. However, the class that carried the Pembroke club to a clean sweep of major domestic honours during the previous Senior Winter League campaign eventually shone through when it mattered most.Lady Bluebirds’ skipper Karlandra Smith attributes her team’s latest triumph to solid defence and clinical shooting inside the circle.“Turnovers were very important so the defence had to step it up just to get that one interception while our shooting was on point,” Smith said. “We didn’t miss too many shots but the turnovers were definitely important.”Smith said she never doubted her team’s ability to bounce back after trailing at the half to a Data Tech Netts outfit that has been bolstered by new additions to the ranks.“We were down at the end of the first half so we definitely had to fight back,” she added. “The main thing was that we knew we had to remain positive throughout the game and not let the calls get to us.“The result went our way but it was definitely a fight. The game was very competitive and it wasn’t given to us easy. And we all appreciated that it was first class netball that we haven’t seen in some time now. We were excited that both teams came hard.”Gina Benjamin scored a game high 11 points in her team’s second straight defeat to Lady Bluebirds in the final of the season-opening tournament.Lady Bluebirds’ triumph in the final avenged an earlier 11-7 loss - their first in more than a season - to Data Tech Netts during the round phase of the tournament.Lady Bluebirds advanced to the final after getting past Warwick Pink Panthers 18-12 in the semi-finals.Goal shooter Danielle Raynor led Lady Bluebirds’ scoring with 12 points while counterpart Debbie Deshields replied with 10 points in a losing cause for Panthers who have also been bolstered by the arrival of several newcomers to their squad.Data Tech Netts advanced to the final after seeing off the club’s junior team Signworx 26-5 in the remaining semi-final.Benjamin poured in 21 points for Data Tech Netts while Diara Benjamin replied with three for Signworx who surpassed many expectations in reaching the last four in the tournament.
