Top motorcycle racer Paul DeCouto left his mark on last weekend’s American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) Pro Superstock/Championship Cup Series (CCS) Festival of Speed held at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. The 43-year-old Bermudian posted an impressive four podium displays racing in ideal conditions with his modified Cycle Care Racing Suzuki GSXR 1000.DeCouto’s weekend peaked after claiming the coveted chequered flag in the Expert 40 Class. He also finished runner up in the Expert Unlimited Superbike event and third in both the Expert GTO and Expert ASRA Pro Superstock events. The father of one started the Expert Unlimited GP race but did not finish after crashing on the third lap. DeCouto was uninjured in the mishap while his bike suffered minor damage.“The weekend went well and I am pleased with my results,” DeCouto said. “It was hot and sunny, making for some great racing.“My main focus was on doing well in the National Series, ASRA Pro Superstock race. Placing third put me equal on points to AMA Professional racer Timothy Bemisderfer who is the points leader.”DeCouto said the highlight of the event was coming from behind to beat Expert rider and reigning CCS Expert Formula 40 National Champion David Loikits in the Expert Formula 40 race.“Loikits managed a commanding lead right from the start of the seven lap race,” he said. “I slowly reeled him in for a pass in turn one on the final lap, maintained the lead and was able to put a couple of lapped riders in between him and myself to take the win.”DeCouto is due to return to the US next month to compete at Road America Raceway in Wisconsin.Earlier this year the veteran rider produced two podium displays at Roebling Road Raceway in Georgia that included victory in the Expert Formula 40 event. He also savoured victory in the Expert Formula 40 at Miami Homestead Raceway in February. The Cycle Care co-owner produced several podium displays on the CCS circuit last year, including seven at the previous Southeast & Mid Atlantic Championship Series at Carolina Motorsport Park, en route to being crowned 2012 Southeast Regional Champion in the Expert Pirelli GTO and Expert Unlimited Classes.
