Smith grabs karting hat-trick

Scott Barnes: Two wins on the weekend.

Zavier Smith blew away the competition in Sunday’s opening round of the National Championship Karting Series at Southside Raceway.Smith completed a hat-trick of victories competing in the Junior Clone Class (10-15 years) to underline his potential.He presently holds an 18-point lead in the championship standings over nearest rival Ryan Burgess who managed two podium displays (second and third).Seasoned campaigners Stephen Corrado and Scott Barnes were the only other drivers managing multiple wins.Corrado posted two victories in the TAG Senior and 125cc Shifter Classes.He currently leads the TAG Senior Class by five points over David Barbosa as well as the 125cc Shifter Class by 11 points ahead of second-placed Scott Barnes.Barnes also had two wins in two separate divisions.He won the second heat in the TAG Senior Class before going on to take the chequered flag in the second heat of the 125cc Shifter Class.Shannon Caisey (125cc Shifter Class) and Barbosa (TAG Senior Class) were the day’s remaining winners.The second meeting of the ten-race National Championship Series will be held at Southside Raceway on October 20.
