The family that stays together, that pulls together, ultimately wins together.

That has certainly proven to be the case for Bermudian Super Stock powerboat racers Luis Martins and Steven Bridges, whose families have played a role in their success in the United States.

Martins, the driver of S12 Nuff Said, is often accompanied at races by daughters Kamryn and Kolby, who are always willing to lend their services wherever needed.

“It’s definitely beautiful to have them supporting. It makes me push and want to do this,” Martins told The Royal Gazette.

“They have a say in it as well and I am enjoying it. And as long as they are enjoying it, I’m enjoying it.”

Kamryn relishes helping her father but admits watching him competing on the water makes her nervous.

“I really enjoy it. I really like coming out here and the racing atmosphere,” she said.

“It is very nerve-racking when he is in the boat. But it’s a lot of fun to watch them do well and finish the race right side up.”

Kolby echoed her sister’s sentiments.

“It’s very scary and we just do our best to keep him fed and hydrated throughout the whole weekend, and it’s a lot of fun,” she said.

“It’s nerve-racking like my sister said, but we have a good time and we’re very proud of him.

“He said when we stop coming to the races we have to stop racing, so we have to keep coming.”

Kamryn added: “He always told us when we were done school he was going to get back into racing because he stopped when I was born. So he did it on a different level, which is pretty impressive.”

Bridges, the boat owner and throttle man on-board S25 Team Bermuda, is accompanied at races by wife Lorraine, who serves the team in various capacities to help ensure that everything runs smoothly.

“Steven has been racing for so long so it’s just something that we did,” she said. “In order to make everything work someone has to be behind the scenes organising it all. It just fell on me but I love it.”

Bridges is grateful for his wife’s support.

“It’s a huge help for me. I wouldn’t be able to do it so to have her alongside helping us means a lot, and all the team appreciate it as well,” he said.

This week has been a special one for the Bridges, who celebrated their wedding anniversary on the opening day of the Xinsurance Clearwater Offshore Nationals in Clearwater Beach, Florida on Thursday.

“Fifteen years, so it’s not just a boat race,” said Lorraine, with a huge grin on her face.
