Team Bermuda bask in glory at Offshore World Championship
Team Bermuda celebrated well into the night after achieving a milestone victory at the Offshore World Championship in Key West, Florida on Friday.
The dynamic duo of David Selley and Steven Bridges were simply a cut above the rest in the Super Stock class as they led every lap in their 32ft catamaran on the way to taking the coveted chequered flag with their first ever victory at this event.
“It’s a dream come true and pretty crazy!” throttle man Bridges told The Royal Gazette.
“Whatever happens for the rest of the week, we guys don’t really care; we got a chequered flag in Key West.
“We’ve still got one more race so we have to buckle down and concentrate on that, but it’s awesome.”
Driver Selley added: “It feels good and I’m kind of lost for words; we won in Key West!”
The pair were confident heading into the race, contested in favourable conditions on the waters off Truman Waterfront Park, despite getting their campaign off to a disappointing start 48 hours earlier.
“We got a raw deal with the cards the other day [Wednesday] but we overtook seven boats,” Selley said.
“Today we knew if we did that again we would be in good position, so we had confidence going in, but it was different mindset today with how calm it was.”
Selley and Bridges started the seven-lap race on the outside and came from behind to take the lead on turn one.
With a clear view in front of them, the duo extended their lead before the race was red flagged after rival team Wozencraft Racing spun out on turn four on the very next lap to bring proceedings to a screeching halt.
“I was like ‘oh, no, here we got again’,” Bridges said.
“We’ve been in those situations before and it wasn’t good for us. It didn’t turn out so well. You’re starting again with 15 boats not 16, but anything can happen. It’s tricky at the starts.”
Selley and Bridges trailed Ignite Offshore Racing coming off the restart but managed to pass their rival on turn three and hold off the chasing pack the rest of the way to take the coveted chequered flag convincingly.
“We’re going to have a couple of beers tonight,” Selley said.
Bridges added: “It’s going to be a long night.
“No testing tomorrow I hope. We know we’re going to run, so we can sleep in tomorrow,.”
The pair’s previous best finish at the Offshore World Championship was third, which they achieved in the penultimate race at last year’s event in Key West.
The milestone victory was their fifth of the season after racking up four wins on the way to being crowned Super Stock National champions this year.
Also flying Bermuda's flag in yesterday’s race Nuff Said, comprised of driver Luis Martins and throttle man Nick Imprescia, endured an eventful outing on the way to finishing seventh.
“We started second last on the outside and had a pretty good start but then there was a crash on lap two so we had to restart,” Martins said.
“When we restarted we started in seventh and actually got hit from the left and the right which put us behind, so we had to pull back if not you would get more damage.
“So we pulled back off the throttles and then you have to get going again once you get out of the wake, so that was our start. It was a very bad start but it is what it is. It’s racing, it’s Key West.
“I think we finished seventh if I’m correct, so not bad from fifteenth to seventh. We’ll take it.”
Martins and Imprescia’s campaign got off to a rocky start after picking up a costly penalty in the opening race on Wednesday, which ended their hopes of claiming a maiden World Championship crown this year.
The pair won the shortened race in their 32ft catamaran but were hit with a severe lap penalty for colliding with a course buoy approaching turn one on the second lap that dropped them down to fifteenth in the standings.
Martins and Imprescia had been gunning for a second straight podium finish at the championship after finishing runner-up last year.
They also won two races on the way to finishing runner-up behind Selley and Bridges in the Super Stock National Championship.
The Offshore World Championship, featuring one hundred teams from around the globe, concludes on Sunday.
