Men’s 5km run highlights preventive health measures

AXA XL Bermuda is challenging men to go the distance and stop men dying too young.

In a year where the pandemic has prevented men from attending regular health checks, the AXA Man on the Run event is here to remind men to stay on top of their health.

“We bring men together to highlight the importance of prevention, as a means to reduce the number of men requiring medical treatment or surgery, particularly in respect to prostate cancer,” says Clifford Roberts, race director.

“We are asking men to commit to running or walking 5 KM by the end of day November 8, either at the official event or at your own pace, on your own time.”

This year, like many events, Covid-19 has forced changes to the physical event.

With Government permission granted for 250 participants, AXA Man on the Run 5k will take place as planned at Warwick Academy on November 8 at 9am.

An additional category this year is a virtual option, for those who would prefer not to attend the physical event, this category enables men to walk.

Along with Butterfield & Vallis and Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, AXA admits that although this year’s event will be different, the cause and purpose have not changed.

The goal of hosting AXA Man on the Run is to bring men from across Bermuda together.

As a men-only event, men have the opportunity to discuss the importance of annual health checks (including the prostate), knowing the risk factors for prostate cancer, and family history. And to raise funds so that Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre can continue to make these uncomfortable topics everyday conversation.

100 per cent of all funds donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will be used to support local men’s health initiatives including the free annual men’s health screening event, lunch and learn Reduce Your Risk presentation series and the Centre’s Equal Access Fund providing financial subsidisation for prostate consultation, ultrasounds, biopsies and radiation therapy.
