Super 6 could be 4-horse race

@$:

Cricket in the Super 6 League is supposed to be very competitive with all of last year’s top teams playing against each other. The goal was to have exciting, competitive matches every week, but we shall see. With several players transferring out of teams from the Super 6, it is highly likely that two clubs, in particular, will struggle, changing the Super 6 into a possible Super 4.Devonshire Recreation Club should have been top contenders but this will not be the case as the club lost a few key players in the off-season.Unfortunately for them they didn’t replace those lost in the transfer window, leaving them to rebuild from within their junior ranks. While Devonshire Rec still have Derrick Brangman and Dean Stevens in their ranks they will not have enough firepower to keep them afloat. They are my first pick to be relegated.Cleveland are my pick for fifth place and the only way they will avoid relegation is by winning against the First Division team that finishes second in a play-off.Jason Anderson and Treadwell Gibbons are two quality bats but their batting is still shallow. Cleveland will struggle if and when these two fail to produce. The loss of Glen Blakeney will prove massive and if they aren’t careful they could easily get drawn into an automatic relegation battle. My pick for fourth place is Southampton Rangers, who are currently in a rebuilding phase. While they still have the likes of Janeiro Tucker and Dion Stovell, too much pressure is on them to produce week in and week out.Their bowling leaves a lot to be desired as they have failed to fill the voids left by Dwayne Leverock and Ryan Belboda. However, with the experience and leadership qualities in the team, on their day they are still capable of beating any team on the Island. There is not much that will separate the top three, so the title will be determined by players’ availability and commitment. This race for the title will go down to the wire.At third I choose Bailey’s Bay. Although Bay secured the services of Rodney Trott, the loss of Irvine Romaine (suspended) will affect them considerably. However, Bay have a secret weapon in team unity and if they can build on that, then anything is possible. They have a very good bowling attack and can easily go on to win the title.Their batting, however, as shown in last Sunday’s game, can be considered fragile and may prove to be their biggest downfall. Stephen Outerbridge’s production or lack of with the bat will be the difference between Bay winning the league and finishing third.Coming in at second place I have Willow Cuts. Their batting has been bolstered with new additions Ricardo Brangman and Dwight Basden. In recent years, batting has been their weakness. In Malachi Jones and George O’Brien, Cuts have the best fast bowling pairing on the Island. However, I do believe that their fate will solely rely on Dexter Basden and Kevin Fubler, two senior players who if they play every week will show that there is no substitute for talent mixed with experience. The one player Cuts will need to see step his game up if they are to be real contenders is Chris Douglas as last season he was relatively quiet by his standards.St. David’s are top dogs and have to still be considered the team to beat even though they have lost several key batsmen.Sadly, they and the cricket fraternity lost Landro Minors, Lionel Cann moved on, and OJ Pitcher will be in school for most of the year. Acquiring the likes of Shannon Raynor and Chris Foggo will offset some of that batting. However, the real strength of this St. David’s team is their bowling. St. David’s easily possess the best bowling team on the Island lead by Justin Pitcher and spin trio Sammy Robinson, Delano Hollis and Delyone Borden. They have a big advantage with the attributes of their coach, Wendell Smith. His standards instilled in both training and games are always purposeful, setting high standards for his players.n Richard Todd has announced he will be running for president of St. George’s Cricket Club.It appears that the club is at its lowest point ever in accordance with the standards that the St.George’s community pride themselves on upholding. It is shocking and embarrassing when a club of St. George’s stature fail to field a cricket team for the first game of the season.Whatever is going on, there needs to be a quick solution. There seems to be a common denominator with the clubs around the Island right now. Clubs and the members of these clubs are looking for change to ensure the viability of their programmes and the club in general. Southampton Rangers and St. David’s are examples of this with new faces and fresh ideas.Todd is keen, hungry, and passionate and will bring innovative ideas and integrity to the club. His platform speaks volumes about the direction he wants to see the club go.This race, just like the Super 6 title, I predict will be a challenge to the very last vote, and unlike my presidential run, Richard Todd is guaranteed to have at least one vote.
