Help raise money for our Olympians

There is always something fundamentally fulfilling about being involved with a concept at the grass roots level. And while I had nothing to do with the creation, I am wonderfully pleased to be involved come Tuesday when the Bermuda Olympic Association launches its inaugural quiz night. It’s anticipated nearly 1,000 people will jam into the auditorium at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess to watch the action as six teams comprising five members each, battle for honour and a host of prizes. The night will also raise awareness of our London Olympic-bound athletes, of which there are now seven, and shed light on the fact the BOA is underfunded and needs way more money to maintain a presence at both the summer and winter Olympics. To that end, prominent former Bermuda born sports star and teacher Tony Roberts, has spent months of his time volunteering to help make this quiz fundraising concept work. And the job he’s done is exemplary.“That’s an understatement,” echoed BOA President Judy Simons. “This simply would not have worked without Mr Roberts and his hours of unselfish volunteering.”okay, so what on God’s green Earth is Tony Roberts and Judy Simons on about? What is this great big BOA quiz night about and for?Well, it is the first of what is going to an annual event — a fundraising high-powered Island-wide evening of fun, tension and competition.Ticket sales to attend the event raise the money for our Olympic-bound athletes, along with generous donations by various Bermuda business houses. This first big event pits those six selected teams against one another. And here is where my interest lies.I was asked to put a team together under the name of Songopoly.I pondered this and thought, you know what, Songopoly is a well received trivia-based quiz show both on TV and radio here — and with me being a sports nut and friend of the BOA, I accepted with a smile on my face and open arms. And I want y’all to cheer for us either at the auditorium or from your lounge chairs when the night is beamed live into your living rooms on ZBM Channel 9.“You are up against some strong teams,” reminded Roberts. “We have teams representing the Government, one representing the Track and Field Association, another representing the Lawn Tennis Association, another from the national Gombeys and a triathlon team calling themselves The Lord Of The Olympic Rings. So you guys will need to know your stuff.”No probs Tone. I have a powerhouse team and anyone who ever watched Songopoly season two this year would know my team mates. We call ourselves The Songopoly Jocks. Catchy, hey!Our team boasts these luminaries:Chris Bardgett (known sportsman, sports lover); Jan Quinn (who won more nights on Songopoly, the TV show, than anyone else); Boyd Vallis (who is one of those affable Bermudians whose broad knowledge of our past is great), and Andrew Cooper (a schoolteacher, and the grand champion of Songopoly last season)! So, quiver in your boots you other pretenders!“I wouldn’t get too cocky,” smiled Simons. “The other teams have some big names on them too.“Larry Mussenden is on one team, Ian Gordon is on another, then there’s Jeff Conyers and don’t forget Donna Watson who heads up the Track and Field side. I think the sporting teams have very strong squads for this.”Oh you think so, Jude! Hmmmm ...Well this makes it a classic confrontation of brains vs brawn ... and we intend to win. After all, the prizes are well worth the fight. If our team finishes third, for example, each member wins a Galaxy Samsung Tablet. The team which comes in second all receive a brand new Kindle and cover while the winners, get this, all walk away with $1,000 each towards travel anywhere in the world. We want to win. I can see me heading to Australia for the cricket in October — courtesy of the BOA’s big quiz night.Tickets, $5, are obtainable from the BOA headquarters or at Sportseller in the Washington Mall. And those many out there reading this who wish to support us — the Songopoly Jocks — can come and wave flags on the night. The event is broken up into three nights with heats on Tuesday and Thursday and the final two days later, June 23.The Songopoly Jocks go into battle on 19 June.So bring it on Muzzo and Gordo and Jeffy ... we are prepared, armed and ready to battle you for the spoils.Oh, and help with the awareness of our athletes and fundraising, let’s not forget that.
