Gymkhana, TEDx and soca are on the horizon

The Police Gymkhana kicks off Police Week 2014 on October 4. Everyone is encouraged to come out for a fun-filled day at the Police Field in Prospect from 10am until 4pm. Youngsters aged three to 16 will be able to participate in bicycle activities and races within a safe environment, while fostering positive interactions with police officers. There are lots of prizes to be won and gombeys will close out the day’s activities. Admission is free. All that is required to take part is a working bicycle and an approved bicycle helmet. Join TEDxBermuda 2014 for a thought-provoking afternoon on Saturday, October 4 at the Fairmont Southampton. From 1pm until 6.30pm, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to inspirational local and international speakers, including Oliver Steeds, Jason Healey, Adjoa Andoh, Jerome Pesenti and Uzimon. The fun doesn’t stop after the main event, as there will also be a wrap party at Pier 6 in Hamilton. From 7.30pm, you can meet all the international and local speakers and enjoy live performances by Bermuda’s own Uzimon and Joy T Barnum, plus DJ entertainment. To celebrate St Francis of Assisi’s feast day on October 4, the Anglican Parish of St George invites you and your pets to the Unfinished Church for a Blessing of Animals at 3pm on Sunday, October 5. Parking is at St George’s Prep and all animals must be on a leash or in a cage. There is no fee, but donations are welcome in aid of the SPCA. For more information, e-mail office@stpeters.bm.

Bring your family and your dog (on a leash) and enjoy the activities at the Bermuda SPCA Expo and Fair in the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 11. From 10am until 4pm, this family fun day will feature a parade of breeds by the Bermuda Kennel Club, an agility demo by the Dog Agility Club, a K9 Demo by the Police Canine Unit, a cat show by the Cat Fanciers Association, a fish show by the Bermuda Fry-Angle Aquarium Society, as well as a white-elephant sale, bake sale, Kiddie Land and more. For $10, you can enter your dog to the pet parade to win fun categories. Enjoy an evening of singing your heart out as the Corporation of St George’s Activities Committee presents Karaoke in the Square, a family karaoke night on Saturday, October 11. From 8pm until 11pm in King’s Square, you are invited to bring your own chair and come out and participate or enjoy all the entertainment. In the event of inclement weather, the rain venue will be Penno’s Wharf Cruise Terminal. This event is free and refreshments will be on sale. Enjoy autumn activities for all ages at Farmfest 2014 on Saturday, October 25 (rain date, October 26). From 10am until 4pm at Devondale, 33 South Road in Devonshire, there will be game stalls, children’s activities and races, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, bratwurst, apple bobbing, pony rides, mum and dad races, beer keg, and pumpkins. Admission is free but there will be games and food tickets available for purchase. All proceeds will support the Bermuda National Trust to preserve natural, architectural and historic treasures.
