Sense of wellness: why not start Tai Chi classes?

•Start off the New Year by doing something good for your mind, body and spirit by starting Tai Chi classes every Tuesday from January 5.

These will run from 5.30pm until 7pm at Sankofa The Wellness Center.

•Now in its 10th year of making your sides hurt with laughter, Just for Laughs Bermuda is returning to the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre from Thursday, January 7th until Saturday, January 9th.

The legendary Alonzo Bodden is coming back to host, and three international comics, Danny Bhoy (Scotland), Cristela Alonzo (USA) and Ivan Decker (Canada), will be performing on all three nights. Bermuda’s own, Improv Bermuda, will open the show to exercise your laughter muscles. It’s not often that you get two Alonzos for the price of one!

The Cabaret Show will be on Thursday, January 7th promises an elegant evening of comedy with round tables, drink service at your table and finger foods available. Credit cards are accepted for food and drink. Reserved seating is available at tables for 4, 6 or 10. You may purchase as few as 2 seats at tables for 4 or 6, but tables for 10 must be purchased in their entirety. While your table is reserved, seats at the table are first come, first served. Showtime is at 8pm. and there will be one intermission. Tickets are $89 for reserved cabaret seating.

The Gala Shows will be on Friday and Saturday, January 8th and 9th. There are three of these shows in total and they all have theatre-style seating. Showtime is at 8.30pm on Friday, with one intermission, and at 7pm and 10pm on Saturday, with no intermissions. Drinks will be available in the lobby outside the theatre and credit cards will be accepted. Tickets for the Gala Shows are $79 for economy tickets, $89 for regular tickets, and $99 for reserved seating.

In addition to JFL, you can also enjoy another extraordinary evening of comedy in a more intimate setting as Alonzo Bodden and Danny Bhoy share the stage in Double Bill at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Wednesday, January 6th at 8pm. There is no need to choose between Double Bill and the main Just for Laughs show as Alonzo and Danny will perform different material at each, so you can happily attend both. You are encouraged to get your tickets early as last year’s show was a near-sellout which got rave reviews. Bermuda’s own, Improv Bermuda, will open the show. Tickets for Double Bill are $45 for reserved seating. Please note that there will be no intermission and no drinks will be sold at the venue.

•BUEI and The Gilbert and Sullivan Society are proud to be bringing the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series to Bermuda (on film) in glorious HD.

The 2016 season starts on Saturday, January 9th with Verdi’s Il Trovatore.

With Anna Netrebko in her highly anticipated Met role debut as Leonora, the tortured heroine of Sir David McVicar’s production of Il Trovatore. Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Count di Luna in the first pairing of the two Russian superstars at the Met since 2002, with Yonghoon Lee as Manrico, the title character, Štefan Kocán as Ferrando, and Dolora Zajick in her signature role of the demented gypsy Azucena. Conducted by Marco Armiliato, this will be in Italian with English subtitles, running for approximately 3 hours, including interval.

The season will continue with Verdi’s Otello on January 23rd, Wagner’s Tannhauser on February 6th, Berg’s Lulu on February 20th, Mozart’s Magic Flute on March 5th, Bizet’s Pearl Fishers on March 19th, Puccini’s Turandot on April 9th, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut on April 16th, Puccini’s Madame Butterfly on May 7th, Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux on May 21st, and Richard Strauss’ Elektra on June 4th.

Tickets are $35, or $30 for students, and available online at www.pTix.bm. They will also be available at BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop around a week before each event and can be purchased in person or by phone on 294-0204. Tickets can also be purchased at the door by cash, cheque or card. When purchasing tickets to five or more shows, the price will be discounted to $30 each.

All screenings are at 5pm on Saturdays in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. There will be a pre-performance and intermission cash bar as well as complimentary hors d’oeuvres at interval.

•The kick-off event of the Bermuda running year, the First Annual Gosling’s to Fairmont Southampton Road Race will take place on Sunday, January 10th.

Starting at 8.30am for walkers, 9am for runners, the race will take participants on a 7.2 mile course between Gosling’s Headquarters on Dundonald Street, Hamilton, and the Fairmont Southampton Beach Club.

Competitors will run from Gosling’s HQ, over Cedar Avenue and Burnaby Street to Front Street, then along East Broadway, The Lane, Harbour Road, Burnt House Hill, Middle Road and up The Fairmont Southampton Driveway before finishing at the Fairmont Southampton’s Beach Club.

The race also includes a competitive walking category, a 3-member team relay, and a Junior 3K race. The main draw prize is a three-night stay at The Plaza Hotel, New York with round-trip JetBlue tickets. A variety of great prizes will also be awarded to finishers, tourists and more.

The Gosling’s to Fairmont Southampton Road Race is organised by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association.

The entry fees for Juniors are $5 for current MAAC / MAAC Junior Members, $10 for all others, and free for Gold Members of MAAC (Contact MAAC Jr Co-ordinator).

The entry fees for Adults are $30 for current MAAC Members, $40 for all others, $50 for late entries, $7 for Gold Members of MAAC, and $60 for Relay Teams ($20 per person). Please note that $7 per entry is now included in your race fee as your registration with the BNAA for this event in lieu of BNAA Membership.

$10 of each race fee will be donated to Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
