Time for OBA to turn out the lights

The OBA has stood behind Cole Simons after his Budget gaffe, but the party’s relevance in the broader picture remained challenged (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

I remember my maths professor asking the class the question: what is nothing? Today, quantum theorists and scientists ponder this question as they try to discover the origins of life.

As we know it, life is a contingency where everything came from whatever preceded it. I came from my parents, they came from theirs, and such is the reality of everything, it all came from what preceded it.

So what pre-existed the universe? The answer will be what we call nothing, which had no beginning. You see, time is something, and thought is something, so “pre” means before thought or time.

Yet if we accept the term “miraculous” as something undefinable by logic, the one and only miracle that scientists accept — because there is and can be no naturalist explanation — is that life now exists. As one philosopher said, “I think, therefore I am.”

The reason for this angle of discourse is that people are terrified of nothing; there must always be something. As an example, at the moment the One Bermuda Alliance is actually nothing politically. In the political game of “winner takes all”, it is in a 30-6 hole, and the prospect of reversing that or changing it even marginally to its favour is nil. So, it is nothing.

Yet the OBA fears closing the door, it fears standing instead as six independents. Because of what? Nothing! It fears nothing. However, life has shown that the greatest creative force in the universe comes out of nothingness.

Just think of the constitutional dilemma that six independent members could cause. First up, there would be no Official Opposition or Opposition leader. So you say, “Well, that does us no good.” Think again: if just one person stands — and it could be any one of the backbenchers — should they get the support, that would become the new Opposition and that person the new Opposition leader. What we do know is that none of the backbenchers will break ranks as long as there is an Opposition because one person standing in such a case would be of no effect and can become isolated (Curtis Dickinson, Renée Ming).

A vacuum is like a magnet in that it attracts; a void is always wanting and needing to be filled. At the moment, there is an obstacle in the road and as long as the obstacle exists, traffic will be diverted around that obstacle.

I don’t know if the picture can be painted sufficiently to make people comprehend when they are their own obstacle. It is like the biblical paradox: “He who tries to save his life will lose it, but he who tries to lose his life for my sake [for the truth] will gain it for ever.”

That’s where we are: the country is thirsting for truth and for good to prevail. We want a group with, as Marc Bean put it, “clean hands and pure hearts”, with rational minds to deliver them from what they see as pending doom from what they sense as tyranny.

The OBA will hold on to the “something” it has, guaranteeing its own destruction and along with it the fate of the country, rather than give up and allow new growth to come out of nowhere. If I were in any way influential, I would be urging them to sit down and round up all the expenses of the organisation, pay them, turn out the lights and look forward to a better day.

The universe has proved that a void will always be filled, as some new growth is a promise. John Lennon said it best when he wrote the song Let it Be.

“Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be

There will be an answer, let it be
