Can promoted Paget make another splash on Sunday?
TWO wins from two outings won't make them league champions. But sitting on top of the Premier Division after two matches wouldn't be a bad way to begin life in the top flight for Paget Community Club. That is where last season's promoted side will be on Sunday evening if they pull off victory against Boulevard on Sunday at White Hill Field.
Doubters may already be suggesting that Paget's 3-2 win over PHC last weekend may not count for much during the course of the six-month long season. However, for a team that had never played in the Premier Division before, the result was a welcome one nonetheless and will go some ways to convincing Paget that they might not be out of their depth in the company of the big boys.
Once the whipping boys of the old Second Division, Paget have come a long way in a short time and their confidence will be high when they take on Boulevard in another home match.
Because of last weekend's Charity Cup match, Boulevard had to wait another week for their first match of the season and that may or may not work in their favour as they are the only Premier Division team not to have played a competitive match so far.
Devonshire Cougars, who lost their Martonmere Cup group match 4-2 to Somerset Trojans in midweek, will have revenge on their minds when they open their league campaign against the same opponents at the Den tonight. The Trojans looked more potent in front of goal on Tuesday, having struggled to convert chances against promoted St. David's last weekend in a 1-1 draw in the east end.
Dion Stovell has quickly moved to the top of the goal scoring charts following his two strikes for the Trojans in midweek which took his tally for the season to three. Cougars have their own proven goalscorer in Raymond Beach whose two efforts came in a losing cause in the cup game. With Heys Wolffe and Aljame Zuill returning to former clubs, Beach will carry much of the goal scoring load for Cougars.
League champions North Village will be hoping for better fortunes in the league after two cup losses have left them 0-2 in the early season. In the Martonmere Cup they were beaten by a late header by PHC player-coach Kyle Lightbourne and while there will be no reason to panic the club will undoubtedly be anxious to get their first win under their belts.
It should come in St. David's on Sunday, but the way in which St. David's battled for a point against Somerset Trojans last weekend would suggest there is plenty of belief already in the Islanders'. Compared with Village, they have a young team with not much Premier Division experience, but, like Paget, they will have something to prove this season. Promoted teams usually start the campaign as relegation favourites and such is the case with St. David's who have been given a tough start to the season with fixtures against the Trojans and now the Rams ? two of the pre-season title tips.
The day's top match will be at St. John's Field where Dandy Town will be looking to follow up their Charity Cup win with three points in their league opener against PHC. Town have made some key signings during the summer with Heys Wolffe returning after a stint with Cougars and marking his return with a couple of goals. Former PHC players Tokia and Antwan Russell, Otis Steede and McLee will be hoping for success against their former team.
Town have already shown they are capable of stopping Village, the question is can they keep up with Village during the season once the Rams hit their stride. Keeping so many players happy is probably coach Devarr Boyles' biggest challenge at St. John's field as he certainly has a squad strong enough to challenge for all the honours.
Meanwhile, the First Division promotion race could be wide open this year, with last season's two relegation sides Ireland Rangers and Devonshire Colts being sending out early warnings. Rangers hammered Hamilton Parish 6-0 and Colts defeating X-Roads 5-1 as Aljame Zuill celebrated his return to Colts with a hat-trick.
Sunday's feature match will involve these two teams as Colts travel to Dockyard. In other matches Southampton Rangers host Wolves, X-Roads entertain Prospect at Garrison Field, St. George's Colts are at home to Hamilton Parish and Social Club welcome Somerset Eagles to Bernark Park.
There are also two women's Konica Cup matches; Lady Cougars meeting Somerset Hurricanes tonight at Devonshire Rec. and Lady Rams taking on St. George's on Sunday at Bernard Park.
