Kids to rub shoulders with Djorkaeff and other pros
A squad of star-struck young football players fly off for the trip of a lifetime on Sunday to get coaching from US pro team the New York Red Bull.
A 22-strong delegation of Wolves youngsters will spend a week training in the historic Giants Stadium alongside such football greats as French World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff and veteran US keeper Tony Meola.
The Major Soccer League team are now coached by former US national team manager Bruce Arena who led the US to the quarterfinals at the 2002 World Cup and also coached them in their recent World Cup campaign in Germany.
Wolves organiser Casey Burgess is leading the delegation of 11 under-11 players and 11 under-13 players plus three other coaches for the five-day training session with the Red Bull training staff and coaches which starts on Monday.
He said: "They will be equipped with their own personalised uniforms and will have their own lockers with their uniforms getting washed every evening by the Red Bull staff.
"They will be treated as if they were real professional players. This will be a very good experience for the kids, they will also play and meet with the senior MLS Red Bull Team."
Burgess admitted he was excited himself about meeting his hero Djorkaeff.
"I have always liked him," he said.
He said Wolves had been wanting to revive their tradition of going on tour and had come across New York Red Bull after some research.
"It will give the kids a real insight into what professional life is really about and what it takes to be a professional.
"They are so excited to be able to meet players they have seen on TV."
And Burgess, 41, who has played for top Bermudian sides such as PHC and North Village as well as the senior Wolves side, hopes the experience can also boost his own coaching skills before the kids kick off their season next month.
Also making the trip are Wolves senior team assistant coach Ervin Simmons, and youth coaches Keane Smith and Peter Smith.
In their spare time the kids will visit New York City and are planning to hold a couple of practice sessions with youth teams from the area.
A tournament is planned while there will also be guest speakers and special media sessions said Burgess.
And he hopes to develop an lasting relationship between Wolves and the Red Bulls which might eventually lead to promising Bermudian youngster getting a crack at major league action.
"That is my dream ? that they might take a look at some of our younger players," he added.
