Policeman clings to hood of moving car

A MOTORIST drove into a police officer and carried him on the hood of his car before braking suddenly to send the officer tumbling onto the road in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm by impaired driving, while the policeman survived with light injuries, a police statement said yesterday.

The horrifying sequence of events started at around 12.30 a.m. after police had set up a traffic diversion at the junction of North Shore Road and Trinity Road in Hamilton Parish, following the accident which led to the death of 19-year-old Kevan Foggo, from St. George?s.

The male driver of a white BMW car, in which there were also two female passengers, ignored the diversion and drove straight through a manned police barrier. Police then managed to stop him.

?As the officer told the driver to turn off the car?s engine and exit the vehicle, the 30-year-old Hamilton Parish man drove straight at the officer, striking him,? the statement said.

?The officer landed on top of the BMW?s front hood, with the driver increasing speed and travelling east on North Shore Road, and the officer hanging onto the hood.

?The man then drove the vehicle erratically side to side, in an attempt to get the officer off the car. He continued to increase his speed, then braked suddenly, throwing the officer into the westbound lane of the North Shore Road at the junction with Fractious Street.?

The driver was arrested after the car had been found in Kitty?s Drive, Hamilton Parish. He was taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained after refusing to take an alco-analyser test.

The officer was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for cuts and abrasions to the head, right arm and forearm.

Police are continuing their inquiries into the incident.
