Nigel brings a smile to the competition
ONE of the things that you look forward to when you meet an old friend is their smile. It is really appreciated and can brighten your day when given. Even a chess player who is about to meet his opponent at the start of a game gives a good luck hand shake and a smile. Now the person whose game I am going to highlight next has devoted the most part of his life to helping a lot of people in Bermuda have their best possible smile — and that is Dentist Dr. Nigel Chudleigh, pictured.
He has also been a strong chess player for some 30 years now. Within that span, he has represented Bermuda a number of times, both in Olympiad Chess and in our own Bermuda International Open, which by the way is to take place between February 9 and 11 2007.
One of the Olympiads that Dr. Chudleigh attended was in 1978 in Buenos Aires. It was Round 10, the last round, when he played against Yum San Chiu. To start off with, both Yum San Chiu and Chudleigh had the same Elo rating — 2,200. Also in this game you can see that Nigel's knight does what a good knight should do, and that is to attack two pieces at the same time as you can see in Diagram 1 move 51.... Nxa3 then again in Diagram 2.
After move 56 as in Diagram 3 you can see that Yum Sun could not remove the knight.
And if he did capture the knight as in Diagram 4 it would have been over soon with Rc1+ the king move to Ke2 with no way of stopping el equals Queen+
On October 25th 1978 this game made the news around the Olympiad. It is all smiles for our Bermuda team and Dr. Nigel Chudleigh.
So — smile! You never know how good it looks on you!
