Bank gets maternal with its staff
The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Ltd. has made a progressive move towards improving facilities for new mothers coming back to the workplace by opening an on-site nursing facility.
The space has been designed to accommodate mothers who choose to express breast milk for their babies.
“We realise how important the breastfeeding relationship is to the health and well being of young babies and their mothers,” said Karla Lacey-Minors, senior vice president human resources and corporate communications.
“This step gives mothers the choice to continue the bond built by breastfeeding, while allowing the mother to fulfil her professional obligations and aspirations,” she added.
The space consists of two rooms prepared after consultation with employees of the Bank who were breastfeeding their babies. One room is comfortably furnished with a fridge, water cooler and lockers for storing equipment.
The second room consists of a number of private cubicles, each with a power outlet, a chair and a desk which enables mothers to express milk in a comfortable environment.
“Historically, more than 20 of our female staff members take maternity leave each year. We anticipate that many of our new mothers will use this resource,” said Ms Lacey-Minors.
