BLDC puts brakes on store plan
A bid to open a consignment store in St. David?s has failed, after Bermuda Land Development Corporation knocked back an application by Bermuda Storage, according to Ralph Saints.
Mr. Saints had hoped to open the store, which was to be called Treasures Consignment Store, this Saturday coming.
But Mr. Saints said that BLDC, from whom he leases the property which houses not only his Bermuda Storage but also the on-line grocery, bermudagrocer.com, had killed the plan.
?Unfortunately they put the brakes on us,? said Mr. Saints yesterday. ?BLDC has decided that they don?t want to go ahead. It is all to do with a planning problem.?
Mr. Saints said that, however, he would go ahead with the sale on Saturday, and hold a few sales after that to get rid of the stock.
?If I get a good response to it, I will go back (to BLDC) and try to get them to rethink it all,? said Mr. Saints.
Mr. Saints said that he will be selling off goods which had been left and not collected at Bermuda Storage. Items range from $2 to $500 and include items of clothing, fridges, stoves, a dining room set.
?It is very good value,? said Mr. Saints. ?There is an oriental rug with a tag proving its authenticity which had cost $750, but I will be selling for $75. The most expensive thing for $500 is a china cabinet.?
Mr. Saints said that the idea for a consignment store came from the goods that had been left at Bermuda Storage and was a way to get rid of the unwanted items clogging up the space at the former naval base at Marginal Wharf.
And he had hoped that people with valuables would come and sell them at the second hand store, with 70 percent of the value given back to the owner after the sale.
The idea was to take on goods they thought might sell, decide on a selling price with the owner and display the item for three weeks, and the price would go down 10 percent each week it did not sell. If they did not sell, the owner would have to collect them or they would be given to charity or disposed of.
This Saturday items left in the storage facility will go on sale from 11 am to 4 p.m. For more details go to
