Transact gets aggressive
Transact Limited has been licensed to provide Internet to both residential and business clients for seven years now but you might not have known it.
That is set to change however with the company - a subsidiary of Bermuda Computer Services (BCS) - rolling out an aggressive campaign to show consumers that it's in the market and with claims of the best prices around.
That campaign includes local advertisements that underscore the bargain prices to be had for Transact's newest service - DSL internet access.
BCS general manager Aaron Smith said the company had long been focused on providing Internet exclusively to its corporate clients. Despite its holding a class C (Internet) licence since 1994, it wasn't until earlier this year that the company decided to break into the home market.
Ironically, Mr. Smith, said it was media reports on local Internet service providers (ISP) that prompted Transact to take advantage of its license and offer its services to residential customers.
The company noticed that although it had its ISP license it wasn't getting mentioned in news reports on local providers. Mr. Smith mentioned this to the Telecommunications ministry who said that moving into the home market might increase their recognition as an ISP.
Now ten months after moving into that market - the company officially launched Internet for residential customers on February 14, 2002 - Transact is now offering both dial-up and DSL Internet service. And it claimed to be better priced than competitors - and it said its claim was based on price comparisons and having crunched the numbers.
But how much cheaper? The company said, for example, that its fastest Internet access - unlimited DSL at a download speed of 256K - goes for $89.95.
Marketing manager Bill Capousis said, compared to the offerings of other local ISPs, that translated to a savings of more than $450 per year.
Mr. Capousis said: "We've priced our services nominally because we can - we can offer Internet to consumers at that price and still do well as a business."
The company also offers a basic DSL package with 25 hours of access - at a download speed of 256K compared to competitor's offering of 128K - for $49.95.
Transact president Wyatt Sellyeh added: "Transact has held a telecommunications license for over seven years, which allows us to offer DSL Internet access.
"We are now adding this valuable service, at a nominal rate, to SOHO businesses and the residential market. It is a natural extension of our ongoing commitment to excellence which affords customers new options."
Mr. Capousis concluded that despite there being several ISPs, Transact was poised to grab market share: "People are looking for good service and state of the art solutions from their provider. Our goal is to give the consumer quality service at a quality price."
And he added: "We already offer Internet service to the residential market and lease line, frame relay Internet access, with ancillary services to business clients in the hospitality, retail, fund management and insurance industries."
